Julian Cox joined the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco in 2010 as its Founding Curator of Photography and Chief Curator. He holds a BA in Art History from the University of Manchester and an M.Phil in the History of Photography from the University College of Wales. Prior to joining the Fine Arts Museums, Julian worked for more than a decade with the photography collections at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. He has organized numerous exhibitions on subjects ranging from the dawn of photography's invention in 19th Century Europe to contemporary practice in the United States. He has been author (and/or co-author) or a number of critally acclaimed publications.

Julian organized the recent exhibition, Keith Haring: The Political Line, at the de Young in February 2015. Consisting of more than 140 works drawn from more than forty collections held in the United States and internationally, this was the first major exhibition to examine Keith Haring’s artistic achievement through the lens of the social, political and cultural issues that preoccupied him during his short but remarkably productive career.

He will be talking to us about his current project: a retrospective of the photographs and films of Danny Lyon (American, born 1942), which will open next summer as the first photography exhibition at the new Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. The exhibition will be coming to the de Young after it leaves the Whitney.

Come and enjoy lunch with your fellow Rotarians as we learn about this important artist.
