Born and raised in San Francisco\, Vicki Hen nessy joined the Sheriff’s Department in 1975 as a member of the first re cruit class that included women\, communities of color and LGBT deputies. She rose quickly through the ranks to become the youngest Captain in Cal ifornia law enforcement\, and then Chief Deputy. She was a member of the Sheriff’s Department’s executive management team for 25 years\, serving i n every division of the department. In 2008\, she was appointed Director of the Department of Emergency Management\, where she directed citywide e mergency planning as well as 911 dispatch for police\, fire and medical e mergency until 2011 when she retired. In 2012\, she was appointed by Mayo r Ed Lee to serve as interim Sheriff for seven months. In November of 201 5\, Hennessy won election by earning 61% of the vote. Her first term as S heriff began on January 8\, 2016. Vicki Hennessy is the mother of two adu lt children and has been married for 39 years to her husband\, Jim Hennes sy\, a retired San Francisco Police Department officer.
