Sheriff Hennessy will talk about San Francisco’s sanctuary city status and the impact of this status on the San Francisco county jail and the Sheriff’s Department.

Born and raised in San Francisco, Vicki Hennessy joined the Sheriff’s Department in 1975 as a member of the first recruit class that included women, communities of color and LGBT deputies. She rose quickly through the ranks to become the youngest Captain in California law enforcement, and then Chief Deputy. She was a member of the Sheriff’s Department’s executive management team for 25 years, serving in every division of the department.

In 2008, she was appointed Director of the Department of Emergency Management, where she directed citywide emergency planning as well as 911 dispatch for police, fire and medical emergency until 2011 when she retired. In 2012, she was appointed by Mayor Ed Lee to serve as interim Sheriff for seven months. In November of 2015, Hennessy won election by earning 61% of the vote. Her first term as Sheriff began on January 8, 2016.

Vicki Hennessy is the mother of two adult children and has been married for 39 years to her husband, Jim Hennessy, a retired San Francisco Police Department officer.
