Andrew Briggs is the founder, President, and CEO of Freedom in Creation, an organization that leverages the creative power of art as a vehicle for cultural understanding, healing and empowerment in Uganda. Through grassroots community development, Freedom in Creation empowers youth and women with art as therapy and entrepreneurship education, enabling them to bring vital resources to their communities. Connecting development programs with international classrooms, Freedom in Creation enriches global education with participatory and service learning.

What began with bridge-building and providing art as therapy for former child soldiers in internally displaced persons camps quickly evolved to creatively address the profound need for water and food security. After a decade of work in the Gulu District of Northern Uganda, Freedom in Creation has provided an estimated 20,000 people with access to clean drinking water and hygiene education training. The organization provides farm-based entrepreneurship education training for youth while working with local schools, churches and the agricultural faculty at Gulu University.

Andrew's talk, entitled Water is Wealth: Cultural Sensibilities Inform Water and Food Security will explore the beginning and evolution of Freedom in Creation and the importance of grounding empowerment efforts with cultural understanding, long term commitment and ensuring that relational infrastructure precede and proceed technical infrastructure. The talk will highlight the way in which Freedom in Creation has leveraged the power of art to penetrate the soil in a rural community of Northern Uganda to put down deep roots of change by providing potable water and farm-based entrepreneurship education for youth..
