Randall Scott will speak on what community benefit districts (CBDs) are and why they are becoming more popular. He will also cover what a public surveillance camera system is and why it’s better run as a public private partnership. There will be time for questions after his presentation. Randall Scott is currently the Executive Director of the Fisherman’s Wharf CBD and began his role there in 2018. As a member of the San Francisco Benefit District Alliance which is comprised of all of the CBDs in the City, Randall was elected by his peers to be President/CEO of that organization in 2022. In 2023, Randall formed and is the President/CEO of Better SF which is another non-profit designed to enter into public private contracts with the City to make San Francisco more efficient and effective. Randall is also the President-Elect of the Rotary Club of Fisherman’s Wharf. Previously, Randall was the Director of Services for the Union Square BID (now called the Union Square Alliance) where he was integral is rolling out the City’s first public surveillance network. Randall’s first entry in the CBD world was running operations for a contractor covering Yerba Buena, Union Square, Mid-Market, Civic Center, and Union Square Park.

Join Family House, a grant partner for the Rotary Club of San Francisco, for an opportunity to set up, serve, and clean up dinner for their community. Volunteers will serve approximately 70 people and Family House staff will be on site to provide support. Event is limited to 10 people. Parking is available on the street. Volunteers are encouraged to wear Rotary-branded attire that can get dirty, as well as layers to be prepared for multiple weather conditions. Dinners will be served outside on the Family House patio. Founded in 1981, the mission of Family House is to serve as a home away from home for families of children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses by providing physical comfort and emotional support free from financial concerns. Family House provides free, temporary housing to families whose children are being treated at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital. Families may stay at Family House for as long as their child is receiving treatment at the hospital, whether a few days or more than a year. Family House is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Families of children receiving bone marrow transplants, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments are their most frequent guests, as well as those undergoing fetal surgery, organ transplants, and cardiac care. All families are referred to Family House by UCSF’s pediatric social workers who prescreen patient families by diagnosis (cancer is first priority); distance of residence from San Francisco (must live at least 50 miles away); and access to/ability to afford local accommodations. Of families served at Family House, UCSF Benioff Pediatric Social Workers report that approximately two-thirds qualify as low-income, according to the State of California Medi-Cal standards. We'll be assembling 150 brand new bikes for distribution to kids in Kindergarten through 5th grade in the Bayview area of San Francisco. This event is a financial partnership among the Rotary Club of San Francisco, the Rotary Club of San Francisco Bayview, the Rotary Club of San Francisco Greater Mission, the Bayview Hunter's Point YMCA, TogetherSF, and 1-800-GOT-JUNK. Also partnering with us on the event will be the San Francisco Police Department, the SF Bike Coalition, and YBike San Francisco. We will have the entire block of York Street at Mariposa closed for the event. The kids and their families will choose their bike as well as a free helmet and bike lock when they arrive at the York Street location. Representatives from the SF Bike Coalition, YBike, and Rotary Clubs will ensure proper bike and helmet fitting. SFPD officers will work with the kids on bike safety and security as they try their bikes out on the closed street. Breakfast and lunch will be provided to volunteers. We will also need help with clean-up from 2:30-3:30 PM. Rotarians, Rotaractors, Interactors, partner organizations, friends, and family are all welcome. Rotarians: Please wear Rotary-themed gear. Long pants and closed-toe shoes recommended for the bike assembly portion. Dr. George Jacob, FRCGS will share his vision of San Francisco tourism in the future. Dr. Jacob is a futurist and the President and CEO of the Smithsonian-affiliated Bay Ecotarium and its seven branches including the San Francisco Aquarium, unified under the mission of ocean conservation, climate resilience, environmental advocacy and sustainability. He currently leads its $260 million transformation into a living climate museum with an oceanarium at its core. Born in India, George Jacob is a Canadian Commonwealth Scholar, founder of multiple stellar public institutions around the world, and winner of numerous national and international awards, author of eight books on the Future of Museums and over 150 editorials. His projects have been inaugurated by two US Presidents and a Vice President. Rarely has there been a person, who has created so many destinations that are anchors of civil societies, visited by millions each year. While he has been the Chief Advisor to the UNEP in the Caribbean on Climate initiatives, he is perhaps the only Aquarium CEO in the world leading five of the biggest Climatoriums/ Oceanariums/ Eco-Parks in three countries- Norway, Jamaica and India- bound to impact millions on Climate Literacy, Awareness and informed Climate Action. He currently serves on the Boards of United States Travel and International Council of Museums. In 2008, Dr. Jacob was honored to be the Project Director of the Star Spangled Banner - the most treasured American icon at the Smithsonian - rededicated to the nation by President George W. Bush. For his three decades of dedication to establishing public institutions, Dr. Jacob was awarded the Louis K Medal by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society - only 5 recipients honored to-date outside of Canada (others being Sir David Attenborough, Sir Michael Pailin, Alex Trebek and President Jimmy Carter). In 2018, he received California's First Environmental Sustainability Award and last year, Canada conferred him with the prestigious Late Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal.

Members of the Rotary Club of San Francisco are invited to celebrate Passover with a traditional evening Seder at the home of a friend of our Club located in the St. Francis Woods neighborhood of San Francisco. The Seder is a meal that starts with the retelling of the story of how the Jews were liberated from slavery in ancient Egypt and a reminder of our obligation to build a better world or all (in other words, Service Above Self). The menu will feature foods traditionally enjoyed by Jewish families at Passover Seders, including gefilte fish, matzo ball soup, braised beef brisket, roast chicken, matzo kugel, vegetables, wine and non-alcoholic beverages, and dessert. While there will be options for those who avoid gluten, we cannot offer a vegetarian or vegan option. Dress is business casual. Our hostess keeps a strictly Kosher home, fully adhering to all of the dietary rules followed by observant, including special rules for the eight-day Passover holiday (from sundown April 22 until sundown on April 30 in 2024). Because space is very limited, this event is open only to Club members. No guests. More information, including the location, will be provided when you register.
