Before this meeting began, President-elect Mary Liu (Real Estate: Sales | JM Real Estate Group | Vanguard Properties) moved each person who logged in early to a breakout room to mix and mingle with fellow Rotarians and guests. This was a great idea from past president John Mathers (Management Consulting | eVo Associates) and reminded us of how we used to socialize before the Tuesday meetings actually began.

President JT Harold Forbus (Accounting | Bogdan & Frasco) welcomed everyone back from their breakout room at 12:15 PM and led them virtually to the Florence Room at Zingari Ristorante. In today's audience were John Cervantes, guests from Rotacare, and Mitone Griffiths of the Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay. Michael Buergi was the guest of immediate past president Casey Blair (Financial Services: Private Trading | KCB Trading, LLC).

President JT talked about the passing of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and we took a moment to remember her life and contributions to the world.

Last Week
Our Club did two community service projects last week. Emily Borland (Engineering, Architecture, and Construction | Emily Borland Specifications) joined to talked about the diaper bag stuffing for giveaway at the Homeless Prenatal Program (HPP). She thanked those who participated and gave a special thank you to Harold Hoogasian (Retail: Florist | Hoogasian Flowers) who not only donated the space for the stuffing but also delivered the stuffed bags and diapers to HPP. Bill Poppen (Banking:  Management | MUFG Union Bank) joined to describe the clean-up and weeding at Rotary Meadow. For a complete story, see here

RotaCare Bay Area
John Mathers on behalf of the San Francisco Rotary Foundation presented a grant of $11,000 to RotaCare Bay Area. Bob Hermann (Information Technology: Administration | Retired UCSF), Vice President of Community Service and a volunteer at RotaCare, talked about the good work done at RotaCare for the uninsured and underserved in our communities. Dr. Marshall Fordyce, M.D. (pictured) of RotaCare joined to thank our Club's Foundation and Rotarians for their commitment to serving those in need in our community.

Member Moment
Today we met Club Member Rosemary Welde (Healthcare: Nursing Services | Stanford Medical Center). She arrived in the Bay Area, fell in love with the climate and the cultural diversity, and stayed. Rosemary enjoys all of the arts and loves to travel. She joined Rotary, because Rotary aligns with her values and how she was raised.

President JT went over upcoming service opportunities and announced upcoming meetings in October 2020. Susan Dean (Healthcare: Nursing Services | Retired), Vice President of International Service, joined to talked about upcoming virtual activities at the United Nations and to encourage everyone to attend our celebration of the 75th anniversary of the UN on October 6, 2020.

Guest Speaker
Bebo White, a former member of our Club, introduced today's speaker and his wife, Nancy Cushen White. Nancy is a Clinical Professor with the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine, at UCSF and a member of the UCSF Dyslexia Research Center Team. During her talk, she explained how spelling in English, phonemes, eponyms, toponyms, and more contribute to the difficulties experienced by those with dyslexia. President JT thanked Nancy and announced that 100 children would be inoculated against polio in her name.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:35 p.m.
