President Mary Liu (Real Estate: Sales | JM Real Estate Group) began today's meeting with a reading of Rotary International's Statement on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. She then talked about our Club's history and these milestones:
 
  • In 1909, the Rotary Club of San Francisco sponsored the next four Rotary Clubs to form: Oakland #3, Seattle #4, Los Angeles #5, and New York #6.
  • In 1911, the Rotary Club of San Francisco sponsored the first club outside of the United States in Dublin, Ireland.
  • Many of the 35,000 Rotary clubs in the world today can trace their roots back to Club #2.
  • The Rotary Club of San Francisco was one of the leaders in the movement to open Rotary membership to women.  
  • In 1987, women were admitted to the Rotary Club of San Francisco.
  • After 113 years of our Club’s founding, Mary Liu became the 7th Female Club President and the 1st Asian American President of the Rotary Club of San Francisco.
Visiting Rotarians and Special Guests
In today's audience were the following visiting Rotarians attending online: Rotary District 5150 Governor Danielle Lallement, Salvador Farfan from Long Beach, Celeste Gordon from Oakland, Greg Knight from Oakland, Lily Muldoon from Saipan, Maude Pervere from Oakland, and Lou Rigali from Oakland. Other guests attending online were Esther Landau of The Arc San Francisco, Harmony Ma of ALPS, and today's speaker - Dr. Todd "Bowtie" Jenkins. Guests attending in person were Nat Crawford, Caryn Crump, Adil Fardaheb, Christopher Marrs, Paris Varias, Greg Grundstrom, and James Wong.
 
Upcoming Events
President Mary invited everyone to participate in the upcoming events shown on the Club calendar and to have "fun" while participating. Sunny Singh (Financial Services: Advising | PK Wealth Management) informed the audience that the registration fee for the Vocational Meeting on August 4, 2021 would be waived if a member registers by 6 p.m. on August 1, 2021.
 
San Francisco Rotary Foundation (SFRF)
SFRF President Dan Joraanstad (Financial Services: Advising | Retired) presented the following agenda:

John Mathers (Management Consulting | eVo Associates) recognized and thanked the SFRF Board members departing after years of service: Tom Briody (Elder Care and Senior Services | Institute on Aging), Casey Blair (Financial Services: Private Trading | KCB Trading, LLC), Cecile Chiquette (Accounting | Fiduciary Administration), Eric Schmautz (Banking: Management | Wells Fargo), and Tim Hornbecker (Nonprofit Management | Retired, The Arc CA).
 
President-Elect Christopher Wiseman (Event Planning | Glaucoma Research Foundation) reported the following results of the 50/50 Campaign for 2020-2021:

Guest Speaker
Dr. Todd JenkinsLuis Moran (Real Estate: Sales | Coldwell Banker) introduced today's speaker - Dr. Todd "Bowtie" Jenkins. Dr. Jenkins is a Rotarian and Paul Harris Fellow from the Rotary Club of Fayetteville, Arkansas. He was recently selected and appointed to serve on the first Rotary International Committee - DEI Taskforce to align Rotary's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion assessment, strategy, goals, and initiatives. He defined "diversity", "equity", and "inclusion" to the audience. He also shared why he wears bowties, because his philosophy is to "bowtie" it all together, serve, and simply be a gift unto the world! Questions and answers followed the presentation. President Mary thanked Dr. Jenkins and announced that 100 children would be inoculated against polio in his name.
 
Scott Plakun (Management Consulting | The Plakun Group) reminded everyone to attend one of these upcoming meetings to learn how to get involved in what our Club is doing to address Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Register for either August 2 or August 5.
 
Goodbye to Past President Casey
JT Forbus and Casey BlairImmediate Past President JT Forbus (Accounting | Bogdan & Frasco) presented a gavel to Past President Casey who is leaving our Club and moving away from the San Francisco Bay Area. We wish Casey and his family the best.
