President-Elect Casey Blair (Financial Services: Private Trading|Feis Options) led this week’s meeting in the beautiful Starlight Room atop the Sir Francis Drake Hotel. Casey welcomed several visiting Rotarians, including our guest speaker, Dr. Jack Higgins, a long-time Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Los Altos. He also welcomed several visitors, including Tim Joehuk, from the Northern Germany Information Office in San Francisco; Lindsay Ward from the Arthritis Foundation; and Vonn Buckley and Mark Smolincki from Ending Pandemics.

An afternoon of poetry and music exploring a variety of perspectives on war, peace and soldiers’ experiences before, during and after battle. This performance, at the Calvary Presbyterian Church, is the West Coast awards celebration for the Heroes’ Voices National Veterans Poetry Contest. Free tickets include the reception after the performance. Volunteers are needed to bring wine, and to help with setup, ushering, and more.

Sheri Greenawald, artistic director of the Merola Opera Program, will provide a behind-the-scenes discussion of what it takes to become an opera star. She will talk about some of the rising opera stars and their upcoming performances, the kinds of challenges top opera performers face, and the technical issues that are at play in certain operas. Her presentation will conclude with a vocal lesson.
