Fellow Rotarians,

What an amazing year it has been. In 12 months we all have achieved so much to improve our world both here locally and internationally.

With so much tragedy in the world, we should be proud of our contribution to make it a better place. By being part of Rotary, and  bycontributing your time and your money, you are helping people that you most likely will never meet. To date this year we have donated $34,668 to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. Those donations strengthen peace efforts, provide clean water and sanitation, support education, grow local economies, save mothers and children, and fight disease.

On a local level, our own San Francisco Rotary#2 Foundation has donated over $100,000 this year to support the projects that we as club members are passionate about. This financial support and the tremendous amount of volunteer hours we all provide is how we make a difference.

I am excited for our future and our drive to continuously improve our great organization. The outgoing and incoming boards have worked together throughout this spring to provide continuity. Again, our focus for the next four years is retention and membership growth. On June 28th we will be sharing more of our plan with you and welcome your involvement and suggestions. Although, I officially retire as your Club President on July 1st, I remain very much committed to our success and will still be very involved. But first, we three Schmautzes are off to Aruba and Saint Marten for a week of vacation.

Thank you, fellow humanitarians, for all that you do and for all you will continue to do to make the world a better place. I am eternally inspired by all that we do!

Yours in Service,
Stephanie

Stories
Highlights from our June meetings

Guest Speakers: Andrew Briggs; Freedom in Creation. Utilizing the power of art therapy and grassroots community development, Freedom of Creation provides entrepreneurship education in Uganda, connecting creativity with model farming.  In addition FIC provides clean drinking water to underserved communities by drilling wells, rehabilitating broken wells, and proviiding hygiene sanitation training.
David Risher; Worldreader. David a Harvard Business School graduate and founder of Worldreader strives to bring digital books to every person in the world. Their rapid scaling capacity is the most effective and inexpensive way to distribute books to those in limited and no-access areas. And it works: after less than 5 months in the program, children show significant improvements in fluency and comprehension.

President Stephanie's debunking: Thank you to President-elect John Mathers for organizing "The Molly Model". John described the world of Rotary according to Molly and involved many members taking "baby photos" and providing feedback on President Stephanie and Molly's year.  A fun time was had by all reminiscing and celebrating all of our clubs achievements.  Like most things, you had to be there :)

Awards: SF Rotary#2 received an impressive award this year called The Presidential Citation Award.  This RI Award marks significant achievements in membership, Public Image, Foundation Giving and member participation in global and local projects.  Only 2 clubs in our district of 42 clubs received this coveted award!

Blue Badge Graduation: Congratulations to our newest "batch" of graduates!  We are happy to have you as members and look forward to continue doing great things together!

Recognizing jobs well done: We thanked our fantastic servers, banquet staff and AV team at The Sir Francis Drake for their wonderful service for 2015-2016 with a certificate acknowledging 20 children have been inoculated against polio and a small gift of our appreciation.

Rotarian of The Month: President Stephanie named President Elect David Dye as June's Rotarian of The Month. President Stephanie appreciates all of his support: he showed up early every Tuesday to help set up and sometimes arrived even before her. Always willing to lend a hand at projects and membership. we are lucky to have such a devoted President Elect!

New Members:  Sacha Joshi (Management and Technology; Nimbus Systems LLC) former member of The Rotary Club of Berkeley and graduate of U.C. Berkeley (Haas) and Columbia University and The University of Toledo.  Sacha's hobbies include golf, sailing, polo and he can also play the flute! Originally from India, he also speaks Hindi and Marathi.  Doghudje Doghudje (Education) came to know Rotary because of its popular presence throughout Nigeria, Doghudje's home country.  He moved to San Francisco to pursue his Masters in Management, and is currently working on his Ph.D.  Doghudje enjoys traveling, writing poetry, and playing golf, tennis and chess.    Welcome Sacha and Doghudje!
Fun and Service
A good-sized contingent of club members attended the Rotary International Convention in Seoul, South Korea.

Dan Joraanstad went on the most recent Rotaplast mission. He had a great time and hopes to inspire others to experience volunteering internationally.

And a good time was had by all at our June Social!
MEMBER PROFILE: Laine Hendricks
Member pictureAfter riding herd on the members of the Rotary Club of San Francisco as President in 2014-15, Laine Hendricks is corralling the SF2, Bayview, SF West and SF Evening clubs during 2015-17 as Assistant Governor. As AG, she serves as a resource to the club presidents and liaison between the clubs and the District Governor and District Leadership Team.

Laine first joined Rotary in 2007 in Fresno, where she worked on a team charged with mentoring and engaging new members. She cites “fellowship and camaraderie” as the things she likes best about Rotary. “I enjoy having fun. It’s a break in my day, an outlet for me to focus on things other than work . . . to flex my muscles and utilize the skill sets I don’t always get to use at work”

A native of Bakersfield, Laine has a bachelor’s degree in public relations and master’s degree in communications and journalism, both from California State University, Fresno. She says that public relations allows her to do things she likes like public speaking, writing and sharing stories. That harks back to grade school, when she and some friends created a newsletter about their friends: “It was cool: We had our own newspaper!”

Laine’s career began at the National Parks Conservation Association, a job she got “through eavesdropping.” Hungry for anything because PR jobs required three years’ experience, she overheard an advisor tell another student about an internship at the National Parks and realized she had met the hiring manager. She called immediately, learned the woman had gotten approval for a fulltime position, and she was hired.

After four years, she was program manager for the NPCA Fresno office, doing advocacy and outreach, primarily for Sequoia, Kings Canyon and Yosemite National Parks, which she calls “the crown jewels of the National Park Service.” Despite the Central Valley’s diversity, most visitors to the parks were white families, so one goal was to attract Latinos and African Americans to the parks. Laine also did advocacy around air quality in the parks and wrote testimony that was delivered before a Congressional subcommittee about restoring back-country land destroyed by Mexican drug cartels growing illegal marijuana.

As a Salvation Army volunteer in Fresno, Laine heard about a job with that organization in San Francisco, where promotes events, gets the word out to the media about the Army’s work in the community, and supports the fund-raising team with human interest stories about people helped by the Army and the organization’s role in large issues. For example, area media outlets are cooperating to focus at the end of June on homelessness.

And what about that “riding herd” and “corralling”? Laine says, “I was born to it, really.” Her older sister rode competitively, and Laine started taking “classes for little tykes” when she was three or four years old. She competed nationally as a pre-teen, achieving a couple of top-five finishes. She rode for Fresno State, competing against other universities in such events as jumping, reining and horsemanship. And, while she grew up competing on her own horse, in college her mount depended on the luck of the draw. “In college, you have to compete on horses you never saw before.”

Laine was up to the challenge.
