President's Message

The new Rotary Year has gotten off to a great start. Thank you to everyone for pitching in and helping make my first few meetings run so smoothly!

I also want to thank everyone who has been in touch with me about the issue of Grindings that we sent out earlier this month. After hearing your comments I'm even more aware of the importance of our club newsletter.

While I want to provide regular communication, I also want to avoid cluttering up everyone's inbox. And I don't want to over-burden the growing group of volunteers working on Grindings by asking them to produce a full issue every week. So we're going to try publishing a full issue of Grindings once a month and a shorter summary of upcoming events on the other weeks.

Grindings will be published on the weekend before the last Tuesday of each month. Each issue will review the month that's ending, preview that month that's about to start, and feature other articles that I hope you will find interesting and informative. The summary of upcoming events will include a brief description of each event as well as links for registration and for more information. Please be sure to read it as we will be cutting back on the number of individual event announcements that we send out.

You can always find information about our club's activities at www.sfrotary.com. Selected events are described on the home page, and all events are listed on the club's calendar page, which you can access by clicking on "Events Calendar" in the menu or by visiting www.sfrotary.com/events/calendar.

As always, I look forward to your feedback and ideas.

Stephanie

Stories
Happy dollars were shared by Immediate Past President Laine Hendricks (Non Profit - Public Relations, The Salvation Army) who was glad to have handed the President's Gavel to Stephanie) and to wish our new president a successful year, by Melissa Galliani (Broadcast, Cumulus Media) for her elder daughter Rachel's graduation from high school (Rachel is next headed to the College of Marin), and by John Mount (Statistical Consulting, Win-Vector LLC) to celebrate the success of his presentation to 600 attendees of the Data Science Summit.

Our vocational speakers were Board Secretary Rhonda Poppen (Grant Writer, GRANTdog), who lets her clients focus on their passion and fulfilling their mission while she focuses on grant research, writing and fine tuning. and Tara Kramlich (Financial Services, Atalanta Capital), who founded her company to focus on lower middle market companies and provide mezzanine capital to resilient management teams who have built strong, sustainable companies.

We had a special guest on July 14: Major General Robert Menist whose father, Major General Stuart Menist, a member of our club for 50 years and Past President (1977-1978). Major General Robert presented us with a wonderful piece of history, a bounded Grindings book from his father's year as club president.

President Stephanie announced that Club Service leaders Kat Forsythe (Consultant, Katherine Forsythe Inc.) and Rick Harrell (Veterans Outreach, Heroes' Voices) will be recruiting volunteers for activities like microphone duty, introductions of visiting Rotarians, raffle ticket sales at each meeting. Please ask how you can help prior to the meeting, or just show up early if you can. She recognized Jian-ying (James) Chen (Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine Japan College) our Rotarian of the Month for being a stellar volunteer at meetings and always willing to help.

We enjoyed informative and interesting talks from Police Chief Greg Suhr and broadcaster John Rothmann.

Did you know that August is Membership Month?

All of us are ambassadors of Rotary and of our club. Do you remember who invited you to Rotary? Did someone call you and invite you to your first meeting or did you seek out Rotary on your own?

In 2007, I met Past President John Uth when he was researching retirement communities. We got to talking when he casually mentioned Rotary and The Rotary Club of San Francisco. I had heard of Rotary and knew there was a Rotary wheel where you enter my home town, but that was about it. John continued to talk about Rotary and insisted that I join him at an upcoming Tuesday meeting. When I didn't show up at that next Tuesday meeting, he called me and invited me again. Finally, I agreed to go.

I remember showing up at The first meeting and looking for John in the crowd. I was nervous and a little overwhelmed as I entered the room. It reminded me of going solo to a wedding. After that initial meeting, John called me several times and invited me to subsequent meetings. At one of these first meetings I remember Allan Herzog buying me a glass of wine and introducing me to more people.

Ultimately I joined Rotary after multiple calls from John. I joined for business networking and the promise of meeting more like-minded people. Boy did I hit the jackpot! I only wish I had joined sooner.

My story reminds me that we need to do more than bring a friend, neighbor or a coworker to lunch. We need to be persistent, follow-up, invite them again and bug them until they join. I for one, am very thankful that John didn't take no for an answer. So, go out there and be a Rotary Ambassador. Invite a future Rotarian to hear Past Rotary International President Rick King at our meeting on August 4th. Rick is one of Rotary's best speakers and he will talk about Rotary's Impact on The World.

I look forward to meeting your guests and introducing them to our wonderful organization as our newest members.

In May 2012, shortly after coming to San Francisco as the newly selected CEO for the Institute on Aging, Tom Briody joined the Rotary Club of San Francisco. Tom grew up in Buffalo, New York with his parents and three sisters. After high school, Tom earned an undergraduate degree at Xavier University in Cincinnati and then went on to the University of Toronto, where he graduated with a Master’s degree in health services.

His involvement in elder care is a result of following in the footsteps of his grandmother Edna Briody and his parents. In 1946, his grandmother started a “home for the aged”. She bought a mansion and hired nurses and other support staff. The business became a success. His parents took over the business in 1960 and ran it until 1990, when his sister assumed control. Because of the comfort level he developed in working with seniors, he naturally pursued a career in elder care services. For over 25 years he has made a name for himself as a leader and innovator in the area of strategic elder care.

After his daughter Elizabeth graduated from college, he and his wife, Greta, decided to move out of Buffalo. Tom considered several cities, including Boston and San Francisco. The Institute on Aging, a 30-year-old organization based in San Francisco selected him as the best choice to lead the organization’s 450 employees operating under a $38 million budget. The organization’s mission is to serve older adults and help them continue to live in their homes. The organization currently serves over 8,000 people.

Once he arrived in San Francisco, it was only natural for Tom to seek out a Rotary club to join. Following in his father’s footsteps, Tom initially joined Rotary in the mid-1980s. One of his major Rotary involvements in Buffalo was managing its Rotary Youth Exchange program.

Tom and Greta have two children, Patrick and Elizabeth. Greta works for Sutter Health. Patrick, following in the family tradition, received a graduate degree in health administration and is now working for a large health system in Chicago.

In his leisure, Tom is an avid cyclist, and self-described gym fanatic. Tom likes to take 30- to 40-mile cycling trips and goes to the gym several times a week. He and his wife enjoy taking advantage of the wonderful dining choices available in San Francisco.

Tom and Greta have begun to take advantage of the sites and environments of California. Additionally, they like to travel internationally. On three separate trips they have toured Austria, visited Amsterdam, and gone on safari in Tanzania.

It's almost time for the big race! Come help fill backpacks with school supplies donated by the Rotary Club of San Francisco. We need 15 volunteer to prepare backpacks so they can be distributed to local students for the coming school year.

Our club is sponsoring the Backpack Dash, a fun and healthy event that the whole community can participate in. 100% of the proceeds will go to local community projects. We hope all club members and their friends will participate by running in the race, becoming a sponsor, making a cash donation ($40 provides one child with a new backpack containing the school supplies that they need to help them succeed), and/or helping on race day. Let's roll up our sleeves, put on our running shoes, or open our wallets to make this a huge success.

Come and enjoy a fellowship, a great meal, and an interesting speaker at our weekly luncheon meeting. Check back to find out who will be speaking.
