The ocean has served as an enormous climate change buffer, slowing the pace of change, but the ocean itself is changing as a result. Dr. Karina Nielsen, Ph.D., will provide an overview of ocean and coastal climate issues as well as potential solutions. Come learn more about “blue” climate adaptations and solutions that work with the power of nature and are good for the ocean and people too.

Dr. Nielsen is the Executive Director and a Professor of Biology at the Estuary & Ocean Science Center, San Francisco State University. She is a marine ecologist who does research at the intersection of conservation, climate change and policy in coastal ecosystems. She has extensive field experience studying rocky shore, sandy beach, surf zone and estuarine ecosystems.

Dr. Nielsen earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Brooklyn College and Ph.D. in Marine Ecology from Oregon State University. She did postdoctoral research at Universidad Católica’s Estación Costera de Investigaciones Marinas in Chile, and with the Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans. Dr. Nielsen was a Professor in the Department of Biology at Sonoma State University for 11 years before joining SF State in 2014. She is a fellow of the California Academy of Sciences, President of the Western Association of Marine Laboratories, and a member of the board of trustees for the Ocean Science Trust. She also does scientific service work for the California Ocean Protection Council as a member of their science advisory team, for the Management Advisory Board for of the San Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, and is a member of the science advisory council for Point Blue Conservation Science.
