Barbara Engdahl, a retired medical social worker with over 40 years of experience, will speak about actions you can take and choices you can make as an activated patient, asking for the treatment you want and refusing what you don’t want. She will discuss Advance Health Care Directives, talking with your doctor – in short, how to be in charge of your own health care. She will talk about California’s Right to Die Law and how you can use it to have a death with dignity reflecting the values you have lived by your whole life.

Barbara Engdahl, MA, MSW has worked in clinic, hospital and home care settings. She is passionate about helping people maintain autonomy and dignity throughout their lives and at the time of their death. For many years she owned a placement agency helping families find care at home and case-managing these placements. She has been a volunteer with Compassion and Choices’ End of Life Counseling program since 2008 and a volunteer with Hospice East Bay. Along this journey, she has gathered many insights and much information about how one can stay in charge of one’s own medical care and when the time must come, one’s dying.
