Denis J. Mulligan is General Manager and CEO of the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District. Prior to becoming the General Manager in September 2010, Mr. Mulligan was the District Engineer for almost a decade. Before coming to work for the District, he worked for Caltrans for over 18 years. A lifelong Bay Area resident, Mr. Mulligan has a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the University of California at Berkeley and is registered as a professional engineer in civil engineering in the State of California.

The Golden Gate Bridge was once considered impossible to build. High winds, deep waters, and a mile of open air spanned the strait between the counties of San Francisco and Marin. Denis Mulligan will take the audience through the incredible work of building the Golden Gate Bridge in the early part of the 20th century. Over the decades, the Bridge has gone through innovative technological changes, including road deck replacement, all-electronic tolling and reversible lane management. More recently the District has advanced safety projects such as the installation of the moveable median barrier. There are more innovative advances coming, as construction of the suicide deterrent net begins and engineers gear up to complete the important seismic retrofit.

The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District is the caretaker of one of our state’s most visible and iconic landmarks – the Golden Gate Bridge -- and is the largest public ferry operator in the state, carrying over 2.5 million passengers annually across the Bay from Larkspur and Sausalito to San Francisco. The District also operates Golden Gate Transit buses between the North Bay and San Francisco for approximately 6 million customers annually.
