San Francisco Sheriff Vicki Hennessy will discuss how her department uses innovation, infrastructure, and inmates to balance public safety with social justice in her talk, The Changing Role of Law Enforcement - What does the Sheriff Do?
Vicki Hennessy joined the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department in 1975. Rising through the ranks, she has served in every division and has been at the center of San Francisco’s national leadership in criminal justice policies. In 2008, then-Mayor Gavin Newsom appointed Hennessy to Director of San Francisco’s Department of Emergency Management where she served until 2011 when she retired. In 2012, the late Mayor Ed Lee appointed Hennessy to serve as interim Sheriff for seven months. In 2015, Hennessy ran for Sheriff and won, becoming the department’s first female leader and the first to ascend to Sheriff through department ranks. She was sworn into office on January 8, 2016. Sheriff Hennessy is a native San Franciscan and works every day to balance public safety with social justice.
