Gender is undergoing a sea change across cultures. No longer is the binary gender system bedrock; instead, gender has become about moving boulders. We are challenged to un-learn everything we think we know about gender and to replace old tropes with new paradigms that make room for infinite variations. Dr. Ehrensaft will share what she has learned from her work with children and families at the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Child and Adolescent Gender clinic. She’ll open up a dialogue with us about the gender affirmative model, which recognizes the complex interplay of nature, nurture, and culture that go into any one person's gender development.

Diane Ehrensaft, Ph.D. is a developmental and clinical psychologist and associate professor of Pediatrics at UCSF. She is Director of Mental Health of the Child and Adolescent Gender and chief psychologist at their gender clinic housed at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in the Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Ehrensaft is author of The Gender Creative Child and Gender Born, Gender Made, and lectures and publishes nationally and internationally on the subject of gender nonconformity, child development, and family relations.
