President JT Harold Forbus (Accounting | Bogdan & Frasco) welcomed District Governor Mary Bates, Assistant Governor Liz Mark, Martha Ryan of the Homeless Prenatal Program, prospective members Liam Sheridan and Katie Cooney, and Club Members and led us virtually to the Empire Room at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel.

President JT shared with us some photos of the past bound issues of Grindings and past Club membership directories. He thanked Harold Hoogasian (Retail: Florist | Hoogasian Flowers) for keeping these historical documents for our Club for free all these years and added that these documents are now being scanned to preserve them.

Rotary Moment
Today, we heard from Allan Herzog (Financial Services: Advising | Wells Fargo Advisors). Allan shared the story of how his disabled son had been told that he would need to be cared for the rest of his life. Instead, the son now lives independently and is able to support himself.

Allan also mentioned other family members, several of whom had served as a Rotary club president. Throughout his life and career, Rotary has served an inspiration to him, and it is why he joined Rotary and stayed.

Homeless Prenatal Program
One of Rotary's areas of focus is maternal and child health. Dan Joraanstad (Financial Services: Advising | Retired), president of the San Francisco Rotary Foundation (SFRF), presented a check for $11,000 to the Homeless Prenatal Program (HPP) for its work to provide prenatal care for women who are pregnant and homeless and to break the cycle of childhood poverty. Emily Borland (Engineering, Architecture, and Construction | Emily Borland Specifications) who is credited with introducing our Club to the HPP commented on the good work of Martha and HPP. Martha thanked the SFRF and Club members for the generosity and continued support. She went on to describe a few of the clients who had benefitted and turned their life around with the help of the HPP.

Master PRLS 3
Potential Rotary Leaders Seminars (PRLS) are a series of courses designed by Rotarians to teach Rotarians skills and techniques as they prepare to assume leadership roles in their Clubs. President JT congratulated the following for having completed Master PRLS 3:

  • Jianying Chen (Healthcare: Acupuncture | American Institute of Zhizhen Therapy and New Qigong).
  • Bob Hermann (Information Technology: Administration | Retired).
  • Mary Liu (Real Estate: Sales | Vanguard Properties/JM Real Estate Group).
The course covered how to facilitate meetings and groups of people and how to make group decisions.

Lena Dokuchayeva (Development | Vereschagin Law), who donated $20 to thank Martha Ryan for her presentation of the HPP.
Dan Joraanstad to give a shout out to Christopher Wiseman (Event Planning | Glaucoma Research Foundation) for Christopher's efforts as Vice President of Development.
Jim Patrick (Retail: Office Supplies | Patrick & Co.) to recognize and honor Allan Herzog for Allan's contributions to our Club and to Rotary.

Guest Speaker
District Governor Mary Bates was today's guest speaker. She described her journey from single mom to her involvement in Rotary. So that dues are not a barrier to becoming a Rotarian, DG Mary mentioned the District's offer to help with membership dues. She also gave the audience a preview of District events to come.

Earlier that day, DG Mary had met with the Board to learn of our Club's goals and projects and to share her vision for the current Rotary year.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:28 p.m.
