Valerie McGrewA local historian, Valerie McGrew will provide an overview of the story of the Irish in San Francisco. The story will include snapshots, which focus on their contributions to San Francisco especially during its early period and the turn of the 20th century. She will also discuss the current vibrant relationship between the San Francisco Bay Area and Ireland.

Valerie is a fourth generation San Franciscan who became increasingly interested in the story of the Irish in San Francisco after her retirement from the San Francisco Superior Court. She is one of the volunteer librarians at the Patrick J. Dowling Library where she has an opportunity to delve into local Irish history. She serves on the Board of the United Irish Societies of San Francisco, which has the pleasure of annually organizing the San Francisco St. Patrick’s Day Parade. This year the 170-year-old tradition will take the form of a virtual parade. Valerie is the author of Nellie’s Story, which is a series of essays about her great-grandmother’s emigration to San Francisco and her life here including the 1906 Earthquake.

This is a regular membership meeting of The Rotary Club of San Francisco, open to all Rotarians, visiting Rotarians, prospective members, and guests.
