John D. O’Connor will speak to us about parallels and contrasts between Watergate and current issues.

John, who previously spoke to our Club about Watergate’s mysteries in his role as lawyer for and co-author with Mark Felt ("Deep Throat"), will speak about the issues surrounding the “Russian Collusion” investigation and the controversy over James Comey’s actions both before and after the 2016 election.

John is a former federal prosecutor in San Francisco during the Watergate era and the Carter Administration, and was a colleague of current Special Counsel Robert Mueller. He has tried over 70 cases in federal and state venues throughout the country, with highly enviable success in complex, contentious disputes. Retained by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company as trial counsel in key cases, he has achieved a pretrial dismissal in each concluded action. A former Federal Prosecutor, Mr. O’Connor was chosen lead outside counsel in certain Savings & Loan crisis litigation, defended a California Attorney General in campaign-related litigation, and successfully represented Golden State Warriors basketball Coach Don Nelson in significant contract claims.

John graduated from the University of Notre Dame (A.B., 1968) magna cum laude and the University of Michigan Law School (J.D., 1972) cum laude. He has spoken at the Commonwealth Club, the Annual Convention of the American Bar Association, the San Francisco Bar Association and numerous other professional and civic groups. He currently serves on the boards of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area (since 2012), The Lincoln Club of Northern California (since 2012), and Alliance for Smiles, Inc. (since 2013).
