Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an intensive leadership experience for high school students. The 2019 RYLA camp was held April 26-28 at the Redwood Glen Camp and Conference Center in the Santa Cruz Mountains near Scotts Valley. Originally started in 1985 by the Rotary Club of San Francisco as “Camp Enterprise”, this leadership camp is now supported by Rotary Clubs throughout District 5150: 32 Rotary Clubs contributed over $80,000 this year, with our Club donating $20,000 as the lead sponsor.
In honor of Mother’s Day, we’d like to share some information with you about our Club’s work helping moms-to-be at the Homeless Prenatal Program (HPP). Our Club is wrapping up its third year of assisting HPP in providing diaper bags full of goodies to its pregnant clients or to new moms.
Typically, we meet on a Tuesday evening at Hoogasian Flowers on 7th Street, organizing and stuffing diaper bags. Each quarter, we’ve stuffed 50-65 bags. Our Club purchases the diaper bags, towels and health kits. Baby clothing, hats, wash clothes, and bibs are donated by a variety of other sources.
President Rhonda Poppen opened the meeting by welcoming visitors, guests and members. Rhonda then displayed a mysterious and interesting gift the Club had received some years ago. The item is a Thomas Kincaid painting of a Rotary meeting. Rhonda asked if anyone had any information as to the donor, or the history of the painting. She will continue to reach out to past Club leaders and long-time members to see if anyone recalls the origin of the painting.
President-Elect Casey Blair will offer a brief training to new and prospective members immediately following the regular luncheon meeting. The training will last about 30 minutes. Whether you are new or returning, everyone is welcome!
This meet-and-greet at the office of Lynn Luckow in Union Square is an opportunity for new and prospective members to get better acquainted with each other as well as with a few Club leaders and longer-term members. Light food and refreshments will be provided. Address provided to everyone who RSVPs.
The annual District Conference is where clubs in the District come together to celebrate the year's accomplishments under the leadership of District Governor Jayne Hulbert. This year's District Conference is a 4-way fest involving Districts 5130, 5150, 5160, and 5190; more districts, more opportunities, and more fun. All members are encouraged to attend, especially members who are moving into leadership positions.
