Daylight savings ended today at 2 AM. We gained an extra hour, and today's issue of Grindings has extra stories and news for you to read and enjoy.
We began a new column entitled "Members in the News" and invite you to share your professional, personal, or Rotary milestones with our members.
In this issue, you will find a list of those members celebrating their birthday in November 2020 as well as a list of members celebrating their anniversary in our Club in November. Help us keep these lists accurate by updating your information on ClubRunner.
In accordance with our Club Bylaws, I am pleased to announce that the following are scheduled to be inducted into our Club as our newest members on November 10, 2020:
Brian Lan says what he loves about Rotary “is the mission of doing service beyond just going through the motions, the ability to serve in a structured and meaningful way. I like the networking, but the real drive is service.” He had done what he calls “one-off” service projects like stints at the food bank, “but I hadn’t had the opportunity to be part of the community, to serve, to give back.”
He says Rotary “is a good fit for what I believe in. I have a day job, but I want to be part of the community, service above self. . .Everyone wants to give back to the community they’re a part of, but Rotarians are dedicated, inspired, trying to make the world a better place. It feels great to be part of people trying to do good.”
The 50/50 Campaign: Helping Neighbors Near and Far is an innovative campaign that showcases both the Rotary Foundation and the San Francisco Rotary Foundation. Every gift made to this annual giving campaign will be equally split between the two entities, allowing for a wider reach of support.
Our Club, the second oldest in the world, is collaborative in this approach, as it allows one gift to be split between local projects and global initiatives.
On Saturday, October 24, 2020, three counties participated in the first Rotary Road Rally to END POLIO NOW! Rotary District 5150 clubs from San Francisco, Marin, and San Mateo counties supported Rotary International’s World Polio Day and in doing so, had a morning of fun and treasure hunting all while in their own vehicles.
In raising money and awareness for ending polio, participants followed fun, educational, and problem solving clues throughout their counties. For many of us, we learned more about the wonderful county in which we live. With geography and landscapes ever changing due to business operations and demands, courses had to adapt and pivot to get around obstacles.
Heidi Kuhn was the Keynote Speaker at the Avenues of Service event for Rotary District 5170 on October 17, 2020. Here is a video of that session.
Mike Davies, a former member of our Club, passed away on October 18, 2020. For more information about Mike and his life, go here.
Note: This is a new monthly column where we invite members to share their professional, personal, or Rotary milestones. All entries are to be submitted to the Grindings Editor who reserves the rights to edit and approve the submissions before publication. Please note that once published, the information is available online to anyone.
